However, this gesture should not be mistaken for goodwill. Instead, it appears to be a strategic delay as the situation in Ukraine evolves.

The attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure should not have occurred in the first place, as they violate international law. The timing of Putin's commitment coincides with the nearing end of winter, a season during which he had hoped to leverage extreme cold to weaken Ukrainian resistance. Yet, once again, Ukrainians have managed to avert a collapse of their energy and heating systems.

As spring approaches, the intensity of Russian attacks on infrastructure would likely decrease naturally, based on patterns observed in previous winters. It is evident that Putin realized he needed to offer Trump some form of concession to allow the U.S. president to maintain a semblance of political credibility.

Notably, while Putin has made this specific concession, discussions regarding a broader ceasefire will be deferred to a later date. The ongoing military offensive by Russian forces indicates that Putin does not currently prioritize an end to hostilities, especially considering his objectives of annexing Ukraine and creating divisions within Western alliances.

The White House's statement following the call lacked clarity regarding the aggressor in this conflict. It merely stated that the situation should have never escalated and should have been resolved long ago through sincere diplomatic efforts. Importantly, the statement failed to address that Putin has the power to end the war at any time.
