Porsche has decided to discontinue its plans for expanding its test track located in southern Italy, following significant protests from environmental activists. The company announced that it would no longer pursue the development project, although it emphasized that the existing facility will remain a crucial part of its vehicle development operations. Porsche intends to continue testing vehicles at the site, which is considered one of the most advanced test tracks globally.
The decision to halt the expansion comes after a thorough evaluation and extensive discussions over the past months, taking into account various social, environmental, and economic factors. Particularly, the current challenging conditions and evolving circumstances within the global automotive industry influenced this choice.
In recent months, Porsche has reported a sharp decline in profits and announced cost-cutting measures, which may have played a role in the decision-making process. The test track near the town of Nardò in Apulia, operational since 2012, features a more than twelve-kilometer circular course and spans over 700 hectares. It is utilized not only by Porsche but also by other automobile manufacturers for testing purposes.
The proposed expansion plans had stirred controversy among local residents and environmental groups, who expressed concerns that the project would result in significant land and forest loss. Porsche had earmarked approximately EUR450 million for the expansion, which included renovations of existing tracks and the construction of new ones. In light of the protests, the regional government had previously issued a temporary halt on the expansion.
This latest development underscores the increasing scrutiny that corporations face regarding their environmental impact and the necessity for businesses to adapt their strategies in response to public sentiment and regulatory frameworks.
