Gipsy Kings: "Music Is a Natural Way of Life"

Champagne, widely regarded as a symbol of luxury and tradition, is facing notable shifts in the global sparkling wine market. The French producer Maison Pommery & Associés, with a long-established reputation in the Champagne region, is currently exploring a strategic partnership with Germany's Henkell, a major sparkling wine manufacturer. The discussions are focused on forming a potential alliance that could result in Henkell acquiring a majority stake in the French company.
The negotiations, which are set to continue exclusively between the two parties for the next two months, emerge amid financial challenges for Pommery. The historic French house, founded in 1836 in Reims, is predominantly owned by Compagnie Vranken, which holds approximately 70% of the shares. Despite its listing on the stock exchange, Pommery has experienced mounting debt, prompting it to seek outside support.
This possible collaboration would bring together two family-owned enterprises, combining established brands and enhancing global reach within the sparkling wine sector. Pommery's portfolio includes the Pommery, Charles Lafitte, and Bissinger labels. Henkell, already a significant player with its acquisition of the smaller Champagne house Alfred Gratien and ownership by Geschwister Oetker Beteiligungen KG, would further strengthen its market presence. The combined entity would possess a diversified offering and expanded distribution channels around the world.
In a recent move to address financial difficulties, Pommery sold the Heidsieck brand earlier this year to competitor Lanson-BCC for EUR50 million. This transaction included valuable historical wine stocks, among them rare bottles recovered from a 1916 shipwreck en route to Russia, a cargo that was lost due to wartime actions. Pommery's assets are not limited to Champagne; the company owns approximately 2,600 hectares of vineyards across prime locations in Champagne, Provence, Camargue, and Portugal's Douro Valley, supporting production of rosé and port wines as well.
The backdrop to these developments is a changing consumer landscape in France, where Champagne sales have declined notably. Domestic sales dropped from 185 million bottles in 2010 to 114 million in 2025. Several factors contribute to this trend. Younger generations in France are increasingly abstaining from alcohol, reducing the traditional association of Champagne with celebrations. Broader economic uncertainties and the impact of inflation have also influenced consumer behavior, making Champagne a more exclusive indulgence. As a result, price sensitivity has increased, and consumers are more likely to opt for a single glass at higher price points, with restaurant prices often exceeding EUR20 per glass.
Meanwhile, alternative sparkling wines such as Prosecco and Sekt have gained popularity. These products are often more affordable and are available in non-alcoholic varieties, broadening their appeal. The potential partnership between Pommery and Henkell is seen as a logical response to changing market dynamics, aiming to strengthen both companies' portfolios and maintain competitiveness. Henkell itself, which also owns the Spanish sparkling wine producer Freixenet, reported moderate earnings last year, with a slight increase in turnover despite overall market pressures.
The evolving landscape of the sparkling wine industry reflects both shifting consumer preferences and broader economic challenges. The outcome of the ongoing negotiations between Pommery and Henkell may have significant implications for the future structure of the Champagne and sparkling wine market in Europe and globally.
