A serious incident involving a 13-year-old girl attacking a caregiver in a psychiatric facility has taken a troubling turn as it has emerged that police had previously warned the clinic of a potential threat. Days before the attack, police received information suggesting that the girl was scheduled to gain access to a kitchen, raising concerns about the presence of sharp objects that could be used as weapons.
Law enforcement officials alerted the facility regarding the risk associated with allowing the young patient access to cooking utensils, particularly knives. Despite the warning, the clinic decided to proceed with its plans regarding the girl's therapy.
A spokesperson for the Landschaftsverband Westfalen-Lippe (LWL) indicated that a representative from the clinic's management would be present the following day to discuss the circumstances surrounding the incident. The priority at this time is to provide support to the injured staff member and to assist the clinical team and other patients in processing the traumatic event.
Reports indicate that the 13-year-old girl attacked the caregiver by stabbing her in the back with a knife. The victim, a 24-year-old woman, was initially in critical condition, but as of the latest updates from police sources, her condition has improved.
Following the incident, the girl was placed in police custody, although it was noted that due to her age, she could not be subjected to pre-trial detention. Authorities have since established a homicide investigation team to look into the event. According to police and the public prosecutor's office in Paderborn, there was no ongoing risk to the public at any point during the incident.
It has also been reported that the girl had been on the authorities' radar for several months as a potential extremist threat. She had been living in a supervised environment where she was monitored around the clock by police. Previous attempts to escape her living situation had resulted in her injuring an officer, which ultimately led to her placement in the secure psychiatric facility.
Sources indicate that the girl had expressed intentions to commit violence before her upcoming 14th birthday, which is significant as it marks the age of criminal responsibility. With her birthday approaching in the autumn, authorities had reportedly become increasingly concerned about her potential actions, particularly in light of her access to the kitchen.
