Police Seize 500 Kilograms of Illegal Fireworks in Van on A12 Motorway

German authorities recently intercepted a van on the A12 motorway near Frankfurt (Oder), discovering a substantial quantity of illegal fireworks on board. The vehicle, which was packed to capacity with approximately 1,500 firework items weighing a total of 500 kilograms, was stopped by federal police during a routine check.

According to official statements, the fireworks comprised products from the F2 and F3 categories, which are strictly regulated under German law. The items had been purchased in Poland, as evidenced by receipts found with the cargo. While consumer-grade fireworks in categories F1 and F2 may be legally sold and used around New Year's Eve, higher-category pyrotechnics such as F3 and F4 require special authorization for both purchase and use due to their increased explosive potential.

Following the stop, federal police initiated a legal investigation against the 24-year-old passenger for violations of the Explosives Act. The van was unloaded at the scene, and authorities plan to destroy the confiscated pyrotechnic material in compliance with safety regulations. The driver, who was not implicated in the violation, was allowed to continue the journey after the removal of the illegal goods.

This seizure comes amid heightened enforcement efforts targeting the cross-border transportation of unauthorized fireworks, particularly ahead of New Year's celebrations. The increased vigilance aims to prevent the distribution and potential misuse of powerful fireworks that can pose significant safety risks to both individuals and the broader public.

In a separate incident earlier in the week, police confiscated an even larger shipment of illegal pyrotechnics, totaling 1.3 tonnes, from another van in the Oberhavel district. In that case, authorities were alerted after witnesses observed fireworks being loaded into a vehicle at night. Officers intercepted the van on the A111 motorway at the Saatwinkler Damm exit, where they found the pyrotechnics stored in 70 cartons. The driver, a 27-year-old man, was temporarily detained after failing to provide the necessary permits for the F4 category fireworks.

German law stipulates that only certified professionals with official approval may handle and ignite fireworks classified as F3 or F4 due to their higher explosive content and potential for harm. The regulations are designed to safeguard public safety, particularly during peak periods such as New Year's Eve when firework use is most prevalent.

Authorities regularly remind the public of the dangers associated with unregulated pyrotechnics. Improper handling and unauthorized possession can result in severe injuries, including burns and traumatic amputations, as well as significant property damage. The recent enforcement actions reflect ongoing concerns about the illegal import and circulation of powerful fireworks, particularly those acquired from neighboring countries where regulations may differ.
