Police Raids Conducted Over Alleged Prescription Fraud

Tue 27th May, 2025

Law enforcement officials executed multiple searches across residences and businesses in Cologne today, targeting individuals suspected of engaging in extensive fraud related to prescription billing. According to the Cologne public prosecutor's office, the investigation has uncovered a total damage amounting to at least EUR6.6 million.

The criminal police launched their operations early this morning, investigating private homes, corporate offices, and a medical practice. At the center of the inquiry are at least six men and one woman, aged between 33 and 66, accused of falsifying prescriptions for medical supplies and medications since March 2022. These forged documents were reportedly submitted to health insurance billing centers, with the total value of the fraudulent claims exceeding EUR10 million.

Authorities have been investigating this case for some time and have included billing centers in their inquiries, notably the ARZ Darmstadt. Carlos Thees, the managing director of ARZ Darmstadt, clarified in response to various reports that no searches had taken place at their facilities.

Furthermore, the public prosecutor's office confirmed that ARZ Darmstadt is not among the suspects in this case; however, other billing centers are indirectly involved due to the fraudulent prescriptions being processed through them.

ARZ Darmstadt reported that they had identified potential fraudulent activities from a service provider and have been cooperating closely with law enforcement and affected insurers as witnesses in the case. They have also filed a criminal complaint against the implicated service provider for suspected fraud.

In their statement, ARZ Darmstadt emphasized that they had not made any public announcements regarding the case to avoid compromising ongoing investigations. They reassured that the incident posed no risks to their operations or the financial assets they manage, emphasizing the integrity of their processes and the security of trust funds.

The Thuringian Pharmacists' Association, a shareholder of ARZ Darmstadt, expressed gratitude for the law enforcement's proactive response, attributing the success to the diligent collaboration with ARZ Darmstadt. Alexander Schneeberg, the association's managing director, stated that they would continue this transparent and responsible approach, aiming for clarification as quickly as possible.
