Police Officer Neutralizes Axe-Wielding Attacker with Leg Shot

Göttingen, Lower Saxony - A violent incident unfolded on Monday evening as local law enforcement confronted an axe-wielding assailant who had previously attacked a couple in a supermarket parking lot. The attacker, who sustained severe injuries, has thus far refused to disclose his identity.

According to police reports, shortly before 9 PM, an unidentified man armed with a wooden plank approached a couple sitting in their vehicle at the Maschmühlenweg supermarket parking lot, threatening them with the makeshift weapon. The frightened couple managed to escape and contacted law enforcement for assistance.

Upon the arrival of the police, the aggressor had already switched his weapon from the plank to an axe. "Initial investigations indicate that the individual advanced towards the police officers with the axe in hand," stated a police spokesperson.

The officers drew their firearms and instructed the attacker to halt and drop the weapon. In an attempt to de-escalate the situation, one officer discharged a warning shot into the air. However, the assailant continued to approach the officers in an increasingly menacing manner. It was only when a police officer fired a precise shot at the man's leg that he was finally subdued.

The assailant collapsed to the ground, bleeding and seriously injured. Emergency medical services were summoned, and he was transported to a hospital where his condition is currently reported as stable.

As of now, the police have not been able to ascertain the identity of the attacker. The spokesperson mentioned that the man had no identification documents in his possession and refused to reveal his name to the officers. Investigators are actively working to determine his personal details.

In light of the incident, the Göttingen police have transferred the investigation regarding the officer's use of a firearm to the Northeim police department for impartiality.
