A police officer in Berlin's Neukölln district was severely injured after being stabbed in the neck by a 28-year-old man.
The incident occurred late on Friday evening when the officer attempted to conduct a routine check on the suspect, who had reportedly damaged a police vehicle outside a station. During the encounter, the man suddenly produced a knife and attacked the officer, inflicting life-threatening injuries.
The officer was immediately taken to a hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery. Initially, officials had indicated that his condition was stable, but subsequent reports confirmed he is in critical condition.
The police have arrested the suspect, a German national, and the case has been handed over to the homicide division, which is investigating the situation as a potential attempted homicide.
This incident follows a separate event just days earlier, where another police officer was seriously injured during a pro-Palestinian demonstration in Berlin. That officer was reportedly trampled by the crowd during the rally, prompting the Berlin public prosecutor's office to take over the investigation into that incident as well.
Authorities are urging caution and vigilance among the public and are increasing patrols in response to the recent violence against law enforcement personnel.
