Pironman 5 Max Mini Tower Case for Raspberry Pi 5 Now Supports Dual SSDs

Mon 12th May, 2025

The Pironman 5 Max, a newly updated mini tower case designed for the Raspberry Pi 5, has been released by the Chinese manufacturer Sunfounder. This latest iteration retains its distinctive design while introducing the capability to accommodate two SSDs.

The housing features a sleek black anodized aluminum finish complemented by dark-tinted acrylic glass. A revamped internal adapter allows for the installation of M.2 SSDs, supporting two cards with lengths of up to 80 mm, a step up from the previous single-card configuration.

The M.2 slots primarily cater to NVMe SSDs but can also accommodate other expansion options, such as the Hailo-8L AI accelerator. Notably, Sunfounder employs a PCI Express 2.0 switch on the adapter. Given that the Raspberry Pi 5 supports only one PCIe lane, users are limited to approximately 500 MB/s, which aligns with SATA 3 speeds.

The case maintains its original components, allowing users to mount the Raspberry Pi 5 to the rear panel similar to a desktop PC setup. The back panel includes cutouts for the device's USB ports and Gigabit Ethernet connection. Additionally, supplementary boards provide two HDMI 2.0 ports and a USB-C power connector.

Another add-on board relocates the GPIO pin header to the side of the case, while the microSD card slot is extended to the front for easier access. The front of the case features a compact 0.96-inch OLED display that can display various metrics, including CPU temperatures.

Included with the Pironman 5 Max is a compact tower cooler complete with a fan designed for the Raspberry Pi 5. Two small RGB fans are positioned at the back of the case, and while there are no large openings at the front for ventilation, airflow is facilitated through the cut-out product name and vented slots, which should suffice given the low heat output of the Raspberry Pi 5.

The Pironman 5 Max is set to retail at $95, inclusive of taxes and shipping from Asia, which translates to approximately EUR85. To mark its launch, Sunfounder is offering a 25% discount. Shipping is expected to commence by June 15, 2025, with plans for direct sales in Germany to follow. The standard Pironman 5 is currently available in Germany for about EUR80.
