Authorities in Pforzheim, southwestern Germany, undertook a significant evacuation operation after the discovery of a large World War II-era bomb during construction work in the city's eastern district. The unexploded ordnance, weighing approximately 1.8 tonnes, was found on a building site and required immediate attention to ensure public safety.

Approximately 30,000 residents were temporarily displaced from their homes on Sunday as bomb disposal experts worked to neutralize the device. The evacuation zone encompassed a substantial section of the city, including portions of the inner city and multiple care facilities. City officials coordinated with emergency services to facilitate the orderly evacuation, providing shelter and assistance to affected individuals during the operation.

The bomb, identified as an HC-4000 type, contained around 1.35 tonnes of explosive material. Its discovery prompted the establishment of a wide security perimeter, leading to the suspension of public transport services in the vicinity. Rail connections to major cities such as Karlsruhe and Stuttgart were also significantly disrupted. Despite these extensive safety measures, major motorways remained open, and critical infrastructure, including the Helios Hospital, continued to function without interruption.

The bomb disposal team commenced their work in the early hours, and after several hours of meticulous effort, successfully rendered the device harmless. Once the all-clear was issued, residents were gradually permitted to return to their homes, roughly seven hours after the initial evacuation began. The operation concluded without incident, and no injuries were reported.

World War II unexploded ordnance continues to pose challenges in many German cities, as decades-old bombs are occasionally unearthed during construction projects. Each such discovery prompts coordinated efforts between municipal authorities, emergency services, and specialist teams to ensure the safety of local populations.

In the wake of the Pforzheim incident, city officials expressed gratitude to residents for their cooperation and patience throughout the evacuation process. The successful defusal of the bomb underlines the ongoing importance of vigilance and preparedness in handling wartime remnants that still affect urban areas in Germany today.
