Personalized Name Badges Enhance Communication in Surgery at UKM

The University Hospital of Münster (UKM) has introduced a new initiative aimed at improving communication and safety in the operating room by implementing personalized name badges for its surgical team. These badges, which display either the first or last name of the staff member along with their professional designation--without titles--are prominently worn on their foreheads.

This innovative approach aims to foster better interaction among team members, facilitating clearer communication and enhancing task assignment during surgical procedures. The visibility of names is particularly beneficial in robotic-assisted surgeries, where medical personnel are often engaged with complex consoles. Dr. Jens Hölzen, who heads the Robotic Surgery Department at UKM, has drawn inspiration from similar initiatives in the Netherlands, expressing enthusiasm for the positive impact of personalized interactions in a high-stakes environment.

By allowing staff to easily identify and address their colleagues, the initiative seeks to break down hierarchical barriers and promote a more collaborative atmosphere in the operating room. Improved identification of team members in surgical attire is expected to lead to more effective teamwork and ultimately enhance patient care.

According to UKM, the project, titled "Power of the First Name," has attracted interest from other medical institutions across Germany. Despite its simplicity, the concept is believed to hold significant potential for advancing leadership culture, collaboration, and the overall quality of care provided to patients.

To further engage the public and other medical professionals, UKM has produced a YouTube video detailing the project and its objectives.
