In response to recent service disruptions affecting its users, PayPal has initiated a compensation program, providing a credit of EUR10 to those impacted by the transaction issues that arose two weeks ago.
The disruptions, triggered by a failure in PayPal's fraud detection system, led to numerous German banks blocking payments processed through the platform. However, the situation has since stabilized, and PayPal is taking steps to restore trust among its customers.
Users are receiving notifications via email from PayPal, informing them of the credit as a gesture of goodwill. The message outlines the company's acknowledgment of the inconvenience caused and apologizes for the disruption. The email assures customers that the credited amount will appear in their PayPal balance shortly, with no further action required on their part.
Despite some skepticism regarding the authenticity of such offers, users have confirmed receipt of the compensation, indicating that this initiative is legitimate and not part of any fraudulent scheme.
This compensation effort represents a significant financial commitment for PayPal. Last week, the company reported that the disruption affected a small fraction of its user base in Germany, estimated at less than five percent of its monthly active users, which amounts to approximately 1.5 million individuals given PayPal's active user base of around 30 million. Consequently, the total cost of the compensation initiative could reach up to EUR15 million.
The service interruptions became public knowledge at the end of August when it was revealed that several German banks had halted all payments to PayPal due to a security issue. PayPal has since attributed the root cause of the problem to programming errors. Initially, it was suggested that transactions worth up to EUR10 billion were affected, a figure which has not been officially confirmed but remains unrefuted.
