Recent research indicates that a concise outpatient rehabilitation program utilizing cognitive and behavioral strategies is both effective and safe for individuals suffering from post-COVID-19 condition (PCC). This study, published in JAMA Network Open, highlights significant advancements in patient recovery.
Conducted by a team from Akershus University Hospital in Lørenskog, Norway, the study involved a randomized trial assessing the effectiveness of a brief outpatient rehabilitation program. The participants, all diagnosed with mild to moderate PCC, were divided into two groups: one receiving the established rehabilitation program and the other receiving standard care.
The rehabilitation program comprised two to eight outpatient visits, each spaced two to six weeks apart. A total of 314 patients were enrolled in the trial, with 231 completing evaluations at the primary endpoint. Results demonstrated both statistically and clinically significant improvements in the Short-Form Health Survey 36 Physical Function Subscale scores, with a notable score difference of 9.2 between the groups.
The researchers observed that the positive effects of the intervention were maintained over time, with the rehabilitation program showing favorable outcomes across a variety of secondary and safety metrics. The findings reinforce the potential role of cognitive and behavioral therapies in enhancing the recovery process for those affected by PCC.
This study contributes valuable evidence supporting the implementation of such rehabilitation interventions in standard clinical practices for post-COVID-19 recovery. The research emphasizes the importance of tailored rehabilitation programs to address the complex needs of patients experiencing lingering symptoms following COVID-19.
As healthcare professionals continue to navigate the challenges posed by the pandemic, this study serves as a crucial resource for developing effective treatment strategies for post-COVID-19 conditions.
