Traffic Reduction Measures Implemented at Berlin's Ostkreuz Neighborhood

Wed 19th Feb, 2025

In an effort to enhance pedestrian and cyclist safety while reducing traffic congestion, the local government in Friedrichshain is initiating a series of traffic calming measures around the Ostkreuz area. The initiative aims to limit through traffic and create a more tranquil environment for residents.

The Niederbarnimstraße has been closed to through traffic since December, and further steps are being taken to minimize vehicle access in the neighborhood. Beginning this month, several streets including Mainzer, Colbestraße, Kinzigstraße, and the western section of Scharnweberstraße will be converted into one-way streets. This information was confirmed by the district office.

Additionally, a traffic barrier known as a 'modal filter' will be installed at the intersection of Scharnweberstraße and Colbestraße to further restrict access. The implementation of one-way signs will also occur on Weserstraße, Finowstraße, and Weichselstraße. A vehicle barrier is set to be constructed at the junction of Jungstraße and Oderstraße, as well as at the intersection of Scharnweberstraße and Weichselstraße.

The district office emphasizes that these changes are designed to improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists while decreasing overall noise levels in the area. These modifications have been coordinated with emergency services including the fire department, police, and municipal cleaning services to ensure operational efficiency.

Importantly, residents will still be able to access their homes via vehicle, with the exception of designated pedestrian zones that will require specific permissions for vehicle entry. According to the local administration, most residents in the Ostkreuz neighborhood do not own personal vehicles. Statistical data indicates that for every 1,000 residents in the Ostkreuz area, there are approximately 158 cars, significantly lower than the citywide average of more than double that figure. Furthermore, it is reported that over 85% of daily trips in the neighborhood are made without the use of a car.
