OpenCloud Launches Business Version 2.0 for Enhanced Data Management

Thu 27th Mar, 2025

OpenCloud has officially unveiled its commercial version, OpenCloud 2.0, following an initial beta release in February. This software, a fork of the ownCloud platform, aims to deliver an efficient and secure solution for file management, sharing, and collaboration tailored specifically for businesses and government agencies.

The latest iteration of OpenCloud is designed to simplify the backup and recovery processes of large data volumes. A notable feature is the 'File Native Backup,' which allows users to achieve fully consistent backups through straightforward file system snapshots or copies, eliminating the need for complex database systems. This approach not only reduces operational overhead but also minimizes risks associated with outages and disruptions, ultimately saving administrators valuable time.

Additionally, the new version boasts a robust full-text search capability and offers high scalability to cater to the growing needs of its users. To enhance its business appeal, OpenCloud has introduced professional service packages that provide customers with direct access to long-term software support, rapid security updates, and personalized assistance.

In a move to facilitate the transition for new users, OpenCloud plans to introduce migration tools in the second quarter of the year, enabling clients to seamlessly transfer their data and structures from other file-sharing platforms.

Users have the flexibility to operate OpenCloud on their own servers or through select partners, with the first Software as a Service (SaaS) offerings expected by May. The community version remains available for free download, alongside a demo instance that resets every hour to ensure data security.

The initial version of OpenCloud was launched at the end of February as a community-focused test release, featuring essential functionalities such as cloud storage, file management, and granular user permissions. The platform integrates with the open-source office suite, Collabora Online, for document editing.

Founded in January as a subsidiary of the Heinlein Group, OpenCloud seeks to position itself as a secure and independent alternative to popular US-based services, targeting businesses, educational institutions, and public sector organizations. The company is also known for its OpenTalk video conferencing solution.

However, the establishment of OpenCloud has sparked controversy, as it originates from a fork of the ownCloud Infinite Scale (oCIS) platform. Reports indicate that over a dozen developers migrated from oCIS to OpenCloud, prompting the security company Kiteworks, which acquired the ownCloud project in 2023, to express dissatisfaction and consider legal action against OpenCloud's founder.
