OpenAI has successfully completed the acquisition of the artificial intelligence startup Windsurf, leading to a significant shift for some of its leading personnel.
In the wake of the acquisition, several top executives and developers from Windsurf, which was previously known as Codeium, are set to join Google's DeepMind team. This transition involves Windsurf's CEO Varun Mohan, co-founder Douglas Chen, and other key members from the research and development department. The announcement was made in a recent blog post by Windsurf.
These former Windsurf employees will reportedly contribute to Google's Gemini AI models, with a particular focus on 'agentic programming.' This innovative approach allows AI agents to autonomously handle programming tasks while striving towards specific objectives, rather than merely assisting human developers with smaller assignments. According to multiple sources including TheVerge and Reuters, Google has agreed to pay Windsurf $2.4 billion in licensing fees to utilize certain technologies from the startup on a non-exclusive basis. However, Google will not acquire any ownership stakes or exert control over Windsurf.
Following the acquisition, Jeff Wang, who was previously the Head of Business at Windsurf, will step in as the interim replacement for Mohan. Wang has been with Windsurf since mid-2023, holding various roles within the company. The acquisition price of $3 billion corresponds to Windsurf's valuation during earlier discussions with other investors regarding a new funding round that included notable firms such as Kleiner Perkins and General Catalyst.
Windsurf specializes in developing software that empowers developers to write code using natural language. This sector is highly competitive, with key players including GitHub (Copilot), Anthropic, and Anysphere (Cursor) also vying for market share.
