At the International Motor Show (IAA) in Munich, Opel has introduced an exciting concept vehicle, the Corsa GSE Vision Gran Turismo. This electric racing car boasts an impressive power output of 588 kW and serves as a precursor to the upcoming generation of the Corsa, set to debut in 2027.
The Corsa GSE Vision Gran Turismo combines the compact dimensions of the future Corsa with cutting-edge performance characteristics, making it a dream for automotive enthusiasts. While the vehicle is designed as a virtual competitor for the popular racing game Gran Turismo 7, it also hints at the design language and engineering prowess that will define the next Corsa model.
This concept car features two electric motors, each producing 350 kW, delivering a total of 588 kW and 800 Nm of torque. It is engineered to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just two seconds and can reach a top speed of 320 km/h. Gamers will enjoy an additional boost function in Gran Turismo, offering an extra 59 kW for a brief period, enhancing the racing experience.
The vehicle is powered by an 82 kWh battery pack located in the underbody, allowing it to achieve remarkable performance figures. In contrast, the current Corsa Electric model has a speed limit of 150 km/h, highlighting the significant gap between this concept and existing production models. Opel's new electric Mokka GSE, for example, has a power output of 206 kW.
In terms of design, the Corsa GSE Vision Gran Turismo showcases advanced aerodynamics with active elements at the rear, contributing to its lightweight construction of under 1.2 tons. Inside, the concept features a minimalist cockpit with lightweight racing seats, emphasizing a focus on performance and driving experience.
While the Corsa GSE Vision Gran Turismo provides a thrilling glimpse into the future of Opel's design and technology, the forthcoming production version of the Corsa is expected to be unveiled within the next 18 months. This new iteration will likely be around 4.1 meters in length, a modest increase from the current model. Although Opel had initially aimed to transition to an all-electric lineup by 2028, current market trends suggest that the next Corsa may still offer internal combustion and mild-hybrid variants alongside its electric counterpart. Some design elements from the concept may carry over to the production model, ensuring that the spirit of the Corsa GSE Vision Gran Turismo is reflected in future vehicles.
