The telecommunications provider O2 Telefónica is experiencing significant financial challenges following the departure of its longstanding major client, 1&1. The recent shift by 1&1, which moved its customer base to the Vodafone network, has resulted in a noticeable reduction in both revenue and operating profit for O2 Telefónica during the first quarter of the year.
According to company reports, total revenue dropped by 8.6 percent to approximately 1.9 billion euros in the first quarter. Concurrently, the company's operating profit, measured as EBITDA, fell by 8.4 percent, reaching 0.6 billion euros. This downturn is directly attributed to the loss of income previously generated through the network access partnership with 1&1.
For several years, 1&1 utilized the O2 mobile network infrastructure, paying regular fees to extend coverage for its own customers in areas where it lacked proprietary network facilities. However, beginning in 2024, 1&1 transitioned to a new agreement with Vodafone, transferring around 12 million customers to the rival network by the end of 2025. This move substantially reduced the financial inflows O2 Telefónica received from its former partner.
The company acknowledges that the negative impact from this client migration will continue to affect financial results in the coming quarters. Nevertheless, O2 Telefónica projects a return to revenue growth by 2027, underpinned by expectations that the temporary effects from partner business adjustments will diminish over time. Management has indicated that these transitional factors are expected to ease during the second half of the current year.
Despite the setback in business figures, O2 Telefónica managed to increase its number of mobile contract customers by 48,000 in the first quarter. However, this growth rate is substantially lower compared to the previous four quarters, where the company averaged over 150,000 new contract customers per quarter. The slower growth highlights the competitive and saturated nature of the German mobile telecommunications market, where substantial increases in customer numbers are becoming increasingly difficult to achieve.
Comparative figures from competitors reveal a mixed landscape: Deutsche Telekom reported an increase of 200,000 mobile contract customers during the same period, while 1&1's customer numbers remained largely unchanged. Vodafone, in contrast, experienced a net loss of 77,000 contract customers.
O2 Telefónica, a subsidiary of the Spanish group Telefónica, continues to operate as a key player in the German telecommunications sector. The company employs approximately 7,650 people in Germany and remains focused on providing mobile and fixed-network internet services, as well as selling smartphones and related devices.
Market analysts observe that while the loss of a major client can present immediate financial hurdles, O2 Telefónica's efforts to stabilize its customer base and adapt to market changes will be crucial in determining its medium-term business outlook. As the company implements strategies to offset the loss and strengthen its core operations, the trajectory of future growth will depend on its ability to innovate and compete effectively within the mature German telecom market.
