O2 Telefónica and Ericsson Deploy Europe's First Cloud RAN, Delivering Over 4 Gbit/s
O2 Telefónica, in collaboration with Ericsson and Wayra, has achieved a major milestone in the advancement of 5G networks by implementing the first-ever Ericsson Cloud RAN solution in Europe's mobile network. This groundbreaking Cloud RAN architecture virtualizes segments of the radio access network, enabling the companies to achieve remarkable speeds of over 4 gigabits per second using millimeter waves in the 26 GHz range - significantly surpassing current 5G capabilities.
A Catalyst for Innovation and Enhanced Network Experience
As a leading provider of Cloud RAN solutions globally, Ericsson has successfully deployed Cloud RAN with mobile operators in North America and Australia. Now, in partnership with O2 Telefónica, they have successfully brought this cutting-edge technology to Europe for the first time.
The Ericsson Cloud RAN solution virtualizes components and functionalities of O2 Telefónica's radio access network, running them as software on standardized hardware, such as traditional Intel-based computers. This approach not only allows for faster updates and greater network efficiency but also enables O2 Telefónica to introduce innovations and new services with increased flexibility.
Embracing the Power of Cloud Technology
Mallik Rao, Chief Technology & Information Officer of O2 Telefónica, expressed their commitment to adopting new network technologies, stating, "O2 Telefónica is a pioneer in deploying new network technologies such as Cloud RAN. With the introduction of a cloud-based, standardized architecture, we are able to respond quickly to customer needs, introduce new products and services even more flexibly and scale our O2 network better."
Daniel Leimbach, Head of Customer Unit Western Europe at Ericsson, emphasized the significance of the partnership, saying, "The partnership between Ericsson and O2 Telefónica demonstrates our commitment to achieve significant breakthroughs on our path to build the networks of the future."
Enabling Digital Applications with Millimeter Waves
The adoption of 5G Cloud RAN brings transformative possibilities for both private and business customers. The "data shower" demonstration at the Wayra Innovation Lab showcased the potential of Cloud RAN and 5G on 26 GHz, using an 800 MHz bandwidth to transfer large files in mere seconds. In industrial settings, this technology allows for seamless software updates in car production and fully digitalized maintenance processes on factory floors.
Private customers can also expect to benefit from data-intensive applications, such as gaming, with the ability to book additional network capacities for smoother cloud gaming experiences. Moreover, the use of millimeter waves as a mobile fixed network substitute, known as fixed wireless access solutions (FWA), offers promising possibilities for private households.
With this successful implementation of Europe's first Cloud RAN in the 26 GHz range, O2 Telefónica and Ericsson are paving the way for a more connected and innovative future. As the telecommunications industry continues to evolve, cloud-based solutions like Cloud RAN are expected to play a central role in transforming network capabilities and delivering unparalleled experiences for consumers and businesses alike.
