Norwegian Queen Sonja Hospitalized After Breathing Issues During Vacation

Tue 22nd Apr, 2025

Queen Sonja of Norway, aged 87, was recently hospitalized after experiencing breathing difficulties while on holiday. According to an announcement from the Norwegian royal family, the Queen was airlifted to the University Hospital in Oslo for medical evaluation and treatment.

Reports indicate that she arrived at the hospital late Monday evening, where healthcare professionals conducted a series of examinations related to her condition. On Tuesday, the royal palace announced that her health had stabilized, allowing for her discharge from the hospital by midday. However, it was noted that all of her official engagements for the remainder of the week would be canceled.

The Queen was reportedly retrieved from the royal family's ski and hunting lodge in Sikkilsdalen, located approximately 300 kilometers northwest of Oslo. This lodge has been a traditional vacation spot for the Norwegian royal family during the Easter holidays since 1924.

This incident follows another health scare earlier this year when Queen Sonja was hospitalized due to atrial fibrillation, a condition characterized by an irregular heartbeat. At that time, she underwent successful surgery to implant a pacemaker to help manage her heart rhythm.

King Harald V, who holds the title of the oldest reigning monarch in Europe at 88 years, also received a pacemaker in March 2024 after facing multiple health challenges in previous years.

Despite his mother's health concerns, Crown Prince Haakon is scheduled to continue with his planned trip to Poland alongside the Norwegian Foreign Minister, as confirmed by a spokesperson for the royal family.
