Extensive Roadworks Scheduled Across Northeast German Highways in 2026

Motorists in northeast Germany should prepare for significant construction activity on major highways throughout 2026, as the Federal Motorway Company launches a comprehensive series of infrastructure projects. This year, substantial investments are being made to upgrade and maintain the autobahn network in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Brandenburg, and Berlin.

The planned works will cover a wide range of critical tasks, including resurfacing roadways, repairing and replacing bridges, and addressing seasonal damage caused by harsh winter conditions. The overall budget for these initiatives stands at 320 million euros, allocated across the three regions to address both urgent repairs and long-term infrastructure improvements. Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania will receive 76 million euros, Brandenburg is allocated 181 million euros, and Berlin will see investments amounting to 63 million euros.

According to the regional branch of the Federal Motorway Company, the focus for 2026 is not only on scheduled upgrades but also on mitigating the effects of an unusually severe winter. The frequent freeze-thaw cycles over recent months have led to an increase in potholes and road surface deterioration, particularly on heavily trafficked routes. For example, the A19 motorway between Röbel and the Brandenburg state border in the direction of Rostock is reported to have extensive winter-related damage. Authorities anticipate speed restrictions, potentially lowering limits to 80 or even 60 kilometers per hour, to ensure safety as repairs are carried out. Currently, this stretch does not have a permanent speed limit.

Brandenburg, with its network of around 800 kilometers of autobahn, faces one of the region's largest infrastructure projects: the replacement of the Mühlenfließ Bridge near Rüdersdorf. This major undertaking involves constructing a new 742-meter bridge, with a total investment of 221.6 million euros spread over three years. The complex nature of this replacement underscores the commitment to maintaining the safety and efficiency of the regional highway system.

Berlin's highways, totaling roughly 100 kilometers, are also set for extensive work, with particular attention on the A115 at Spanische Allee. This segment is expected to experience the most significant impact on traffic flow, as construction challenges and the after-effects of the harsh winter have led to delays. The works on this section are projected to continue until the end of 2027, placing them approximately nine months behind the original schedule.

Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, home to nearly 580 kilometers of autobahn, will also see major investments directed towards road surface renewals and bridge maintenance, aiming to enhance safety and reduce future maintenance needs. The combination of planned construction and reactive repairs due to winter weather highlights the ongoing effort to modernize critical transport infrastructure in the region.

Motorists traveling through the northeast region are advised to anticipate potential delays, temporary detours, and speed reductions in affected areas. Authorities recommend that drivers stay updated on current road conditions and plan their journeys accordingly to minimize inconvenience during the construction period.
