Ten Years After the OECD's Warning: Bias Against Boys in Schools Still Ignored

In a significant turn of events in New Zealand, three children reported missing for nearly four years have been located in the Waitomo district. Jayda (12), Maverick (10), and Ember (9), children of the notorious fugitive Tom Phillips, were discovered alive, bringing relief to their family and authorities alike.
The situation unfolded dramatically on a Monday morning when 37-year-old Tom Phillips engaged in a violent confrontation with police. The incident began with Phillips allegedly breaking into a store in Piopio around 3 AM. Witnesses reported seeing two individuals, one large and one smaller, leading the police to suspect that Phillips had taken one of his children with him.
In response, law enforcement set a trap for Phillips, utilizing spike strips on potential escape routes. A helicopter was deployed to assist in the operation. As Phillips attempted to flee on a quad bike, the police plan succeeded; the vehicle's tires were punctured, forcing him to abandon it. Upon exiting the vehicle, Phillips opened fire on the approaching officers, resulting in a severe injury to one policeman, who was struck in the head.
Tragically, Phillips was killed during the exchange of gunfire, while the injured officer remains in critical condition at a local hospital. Investigators later confirmed that one of the individuals with Phillips was indeed his daughter Jayda, who was taken into police custody. However, initial searches for Maverick and Ember yielded no results, raising concerns for their safety.
In the afternoon, a breakthrough occurred when the two younger children were discovered at a remote campsite in the wilderness, unharmed and safe. The police expressed their relief at the outcome, stating, 'The children are safe and sound.' This resolution marks the end of one of New Zealand's longest-running missing persons cases.
Prime Minister Christopher Luxon addressed the nation, describing the situation as 'absolutely tragic' given the violent circumstances surrounding their father's death. The children's mother, Cat, has also expressed her gratitude for their safe return, emphasizing the relief felt by their family.
Tom Phillips had been a significant focus of law enforcement since he vanished with the children in 2021, following a custody dispute. His disappearance sparked widespread searches and led to a substantial reward of $80,000 for information leading to their whereabouts. Despite numerous sightings reported over the years, it was only after this recent incident that the children were ultimately found.
