Cloppenburg - Significant developments have emerged in the nearly 30-year-old murder investigation of Nenad Gajanovic. On October 10, 2023, the Cloppenburg/Vechta Police Inspectorate, in collaboration with the Hamburg Police, Swedish law enforcement agencies, and Europol, executed searches at the residences of three suspects in Hamburg and Sweden.

Nenad Gajanovic, then 36 years old, was discovered shot dead near Lake Dümmer in August 1996. Renewed media attention in September 2024 led to fresh leads, prompting the investigation against the identified suspects.

The murder investigation, known as "Gajo 96," has been meticulously led by the Oldenburg Public Prosecutor's Office. Numerous leads have extended beyond national borders, necessitating coordination with Europol and various European law enforcement agencies.

Following a request from the Oldenburg Public Prosecutor, a court issued search warrants for the private residences of the three suspects. These searches were successfully carried out with the assistance of specialized police units from Hamburg and Sweden. Evidence was seized during the operation, which is now undergoing analysis in Cloppenburg.

As of now, no arrests have been made, but the murder commission is diligently pursuing further inquiries and investigating additional leads. Authorities are not ruling out the possibility that more individuals may be involved in the case. The police continue to seek information from witnesses and those with relevant knowledge of the incident.

The public is encouraged to provide tips via the dedicated portal at nds.hinweisportal.de/moko-gajo-96, where witnesses can also contact law enforcement anonymously and upload files and images.

Information can be submitted to the murder commission at the phone number 04471-1860-200 or through email at coldcase@pi-clp.polizei.niedersachsen.de. Additionally, the short film detailing the case remains available for streaming on the police department's website: polizei-nds.de.

The Oldenburg Police Directorate has also announced a reward of EUR5,000 for information leading to the resolution of the case and the capture of the perpetrators, which remains active.
