Tue 13th May, 2025

The Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER) has announced the appointment of István Szabó from Budapest as its new Co-Managing Director, set to assume the role in the upcoming autumn. Szabó will oversee daily operations, stepping into the position previously held by Thomas Hoff Andersson, who is moving to Munich Airport after a tenure of three years.

Szabó, a qualified lawyer and cyber-security expert, is currently serving in a similar capacity at Budapest Airport. His leadership contributed to Budapest being recognized twice, in 2022 and 2024, as the best airport in Europe within the category of 15 to 25 million passengers annually, according to the ACI Airport Service Quality Ranking. Furthermore, Budapest Airport has achieved a four-star rating from the Skytrax agency.

Fluent in Hungarian, German, and English, Szabó aims to enhance operational efficiency and service excellence at BER. He stated that his primary objectives will focus on delivering optimal processes and services for both airlines and passengers.

As the airport prepares for an increase in traffic during the holiday season, the leadership at BER, including Aletta von Massenbach, who remains as Chair of the Management Board, expresses confidence in Szabó's ability to contribute to the airport's growth and operational efficiency.

Von Massenbach emphasized the joint commitment to developing BER into a high-performing airport that provides a favorable operational environment for airlines while ensuring a safe and pleasant travel experience for passengers.

With Szabó's extensive experience in airport management and his track record of success, the BER management team is optimistic about tackling the challenges ahead, including addressing delays, long security queues, and technical issues in baggage handling.
