The ongoing tariff dispute involving public sector employees is reaching a critical juncture, with significant implications for patients and care recipients. The Verdi union has announced a nationwide warning strike scheduled for Thursday, impacting hospitals, nursing homes, and emergency services across Germany.
In a statement released from Berlin, Verdi indicated that individuals receiving care in hospitals and facilities should anticipate operational disruptions. This strike is a response to the ongoing negotiations with the federal government and local municipalities, with a pivotal round of discussions approaching in mid-March.
According to Verdi leaders, the essential contributions of healthcare workers and those in psychiatric services are widely acknowledged by the public. However, the union criticizes employers for failing to reciprocate this recognition. Verdi has expressed frustration that during the second round of tariff negotiations held in mid-February, no proposals were put forth by the employers.
Union representatives have described the employers' stance as provocative, particularly regarding their reluctance to agree to meaningful wage increases. They expressed concern over the employers' proposal that suggests minimal to no salary adjustments over an extended contract duration of 36 months.
Verdi is advocating for an overall salary increase of eight percent, along with a minimum monthly raise of 350 euros. Additional demands include enhanced allowances for work conducted under challenging conditions, as well as a 200-euro increase in training and internship compensation. Furthermore, the union is requesting three additional days off for employees.
Employers have labeled these demands as financially unfeasible, and talks are set to resume from March 14 to 16, 2025, in Potsdam. As the situation develops, the potential impact on healthcare services could be significant, affecting the well-being of countless individuals reliant on these essential services.
