MWC 2025: A Comprehensive Look at the New Nothing Phone (3a) and (3a) Pro

Tue 4th Mar, 2025

The Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2025 has unveiled the latest offerings from Nothing, featuring the Nothing Phone (3a) and its Pro counterpart. Despite their similarities, these two Android smartphones exhibit notable distinctions in design, camera capabilities, and battery performance.

Both models are powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 chipset and boast a 6.77-inch OLED display. They are equipped with a robust 5000 mAh battery, catering to users who demand longevity from their devices. While the Pro version includes support for eSIM, both smartphones are compatible with 5G networks. Their unique transparent back design, complemented by the innovative Glyph LED lighting system, provides an aesthetic appeal and is rated IP64 for dust and water resistance. However, users may note that the company offers limited support with only four years of security patches and three updates for Android operating systems, as they launch with Nothing OS 3.1 based on Android 15.

Camera technology is a key differentiator between the two models. Both the Phone (3a) and (3a) Pro feature a primary 50 MP camera. However, the Pro model is equipped with a horizontally positioned triple telephoto lens, allowing for enhanced optical zoom capabilities, while the standard Phone (3a) offers a dual zoom with a 50 MP sensor. Both devices incorporate an ultra-wide lens, though it is limited to an 8 MP sensor, a downgrade from the previous generation's 50 MP offering. The front-facing camera of the Pro achieves a resolution of 50 MP, compared to the 32 MP camera found in the standard model.

Notably, the new smartphones are claimed to have the lowest carbon footprint to date among Nothing's product line, weighing in at 51.3 kg. The devices utilize partially recycled materials, with aluminum and tin components being 100% recycled.

Another highlight is the introduction of the Essential AI feature, exclusive to the Phone (3a) and (3a) Pro. This functionality requires a specific button located beneath the power button, enabling users to take screenshots, record audio, and create reminders or recommendations through voice or text. All data processed through this feature is stored on a server in Paris, ensuring compliance with EU data regulations.

Performance benchmarks reveal that while the Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 is a mid-range processor, it does not compete with higher-end models like the Snapdragon 8 Elite or MediaTek Dimensity 9400. Nonetheless, both smartphones have demonstrated satisfactory everyday performance, with minimal lag noted during app launches and transitions.

Battery life tests provided surprising results, with the Phone (3a) outperforming the Pro model in various scenarios. While both devices are equipped with similar components, the standard model lasted slightly longer during video playback and gaming sessions. Overall, both phones offer commendable battery performance.

In terms of display, both models shine with impressive brightness levels, achieving 1303 cd/m² for the Pro and 1217 cd/m² for the standard model, aligning with Nothing's claims for outdoor usability. The maximum brightness can even reach up to 3000 cd/m² in everyday use.

Both the Nothing Phone (3a) and (3a) Pro are now available for pre-order, with the standard model shipping immediately and the Pro version following a week later. Early adopters can take advantage of bundled offers that include Nothing's Ear (a) headphones or the CMF Watch Pro 2. The pricing reflects their specifications, with the Phone (3a) starting at EUR329 for the 8/128 GB model and EUR379 for the 12/256 GB variant. In contrast, the Phone (3a) Pro is priced at EUR459 and is only available in the larger storage option.
