Berlin - A serious traffic accident involving a tram and a coach occurred near Berlin's Alexanderplatz. Emergency services, including police and firefighters, responded quickly due to the anticipated number of injuries, leading to the closure of the surrounding streets. The incident took place at the intersection of Mollstraße and Otto-Braun-Straße, and emergency operations are ongoing.
Initial reports suggest that the coach failed to see the tram operated by the Berlin public transport authority (BVG) while making a turn, resulting in a collision that caused the tram to derail. The accident occurred around 1:26 PM at the Mollstraße, close to Berolinastraße. In this area, the tram runs in the middle of the wide street, while cars are permitted to use multiple lanes on either side.
It appears that the coach attempted to cross the tram tracks at a narrow crossing point that is not open to traffic. Following the impact, the tram derailed. Contrary to early assumptions, there were not many passengers on the coach, as it contained only the driver. However, the tram was carrying a school class, among other passengers.
Reports indicate that the coach driver sustained serious injuries, while six individuals experienced minor injuries and were treated by emergency personnel. The tram had 29 passengers, mostly children. Currently, responders are assessing the condition of those involved, with psychological support being offered to the uninjured passengers of the tram.
Approximately 60 firefighters are on site managing the situation. Both vehicles were heavily damaged in the incident. The coach was also pushed against the tram's overhead power lines, causing damage to a support mast and resulting in a power outage affecting tram services across a wider area. The power disruption impacts several lines, including M2, M4, M5, M6, M8, 18, and 21, causing further delays in public transport.
A spokesperson for the BVG expressed their condolences regarding the serious accident, emphasizing their concern for the victims and wishing for a swift recovery for those injured. They also extended gratitude to the emergency services working at the scene.
