A regional court in Siegen, North Rhine-Westphalia, has sentenced a woman to five years in prison after finding her guilty of keeping her daughter isolated from the outside world for over seven years. The case, which emerged from the town of Attendorn in the Sauerland region, has drawn significant attention due to the prolonged deprivation experienced by the child.
According to the court's findings, the mother hid her daughter in her parents' home from early childhood, preventing any contact with the outside world. The girl, discovered at the age of eight in September 2022, had reportedly suffered extensive psychological, physical, and emotional difficulties as a result of her isolation. She had never attended a kindergarten or school, nor had she interacted with other children or played outdoors during the period of confinement.
The court also imposed sentences on the child's grandparents. The grandmother, aged 80, received a two-year suspended sentence. Although initially charged as an accessory, the court ultimately found her guilty of co-perpetration. The grandfather was handed a 15-month suspended sentence for his role as an accomplice. All sentences remain subject to appeal, and legal representatives may seek a review by the country's highest court.
The prosecution outlined that the girl's isolation began in mid-July 2015, when the mother deliberately cut off all contact with the child's father. She reportedly maintained a false narrative, claiming to be living in Italy with the child, in order to avoid detection by the authorities and the father's family. The court found that, throughout the seven-year period, the girl remained entirely within the confines of the family home, with no access to formal education or social integration.
Legal proceedings determined that the mother was guilty of multiple offenses, including the abuse of a person under her protection, deprivation of liberty, and failure to fulfill parental duties. The court emphasized the severe impact such isolation can have on a child's development, highlighting the necessity of safeguarding children's rights and welfare in domestic environments.
The case was brought to light when authorities intervened, leading to the child's rescue and subsequent investigation. Medical and psychological assessments confirmed the significant developmental delays and trauma experienced by the girl, which will require ongoing support and rehabilitation.
The ruling underscores the responsibility of guardians to provide not only physical care but also access to education, social interaction, and emotional support. The verdict also serves as a reminder of the mechanisms in place to protect vulnerable children and hold responsible parties accountable for violations of their welfare.
The judgment is not yet legally binding, and further legal challenges are possible. The case has prompted renewed discussion about the monitoring of children's welfare in private households and the effectiveness of existing child protection systems.
