Berlin - A tragic discovery was made two weeks ago in the Neukölln district when an off-duty police officer found the body of a newborn on the sidewalk along Kölner Damm. The whereabouts of the child's mother remained unknown until recently.

On Friday morning, the 25-year-old mother of the deceased baby girl, who holds Indian citizenship, presented herself to the homicide unit in the company of her attorney. This revelation was confirmed by Michael Petzold, spokesperson for the Berlin Public Prosecutor's Office, following inquiries from media outlets.

Initially, the woman did not provide detailed statements regarding the incident but acknowledged through her lawyer that she is the mother. According to Petzold, she is now considered a suspect and was promptly arrested. A judge has since issued an arrest warrant on suspicion of manslaughter. The 25-year-old is currently in pre-trial detention, as announced by the Berlin Public Prosecutor's Office.

Details surrounding the case remain sparse. An autopsy of the infant's remains confirmed that the baby was born alive but died due to violent circumstances.

Law enforcement officials have taken over the investigation. They utilized drones and search dogs in the vicinity of where the body was discovered. The search dogs picked up scents leading to a high-rise building on Lipschitzallee, ultimately directing officers to an apartment on the second floor. However, it was determined that the tenant of this apartment is not connected to the child's death.

The community is left to ponder the circumstances that led to this tragic event, as the mother may eventually explain the reasons behind the untimely death of her child.

A moment of silence and reflection has been observed near the site where the infant was found.
