Moselle River to Remain Closed for Months Following Lock Incident
The Moselle River will likely remain closed to shipping traffic for an extended period, following an incident at a lock. The Waterways and Shipping Authority (WSA) Mosel-Saar-Lahn has announced that the river will be impassable for vessels until at least the end of March. During the accident at the Müden lock, the cargo vessel struck a partially opened lock gate, leading to the complete dislodgment of both gates from their fixtures. The incident has left approximately 70 ships stranded along the Moselle, unable to navigate towards the Rhine through the regions of Saarland and Rhineland-Palatinate.
