Tue 14th Jul, 2026

Authorities are continuing an intensive search operation in Werbellinsee, near Altenhof in the district of Barnim, after a 20-year-old man went missing while swimming. The young man, who was accompanied by a woman, had been out on the lake using a pedal boat before deciding to swim. According to reports from the local police, after spending some time swimming, he submerged and did not reappear at the surface.

The incident prompted a rapid response from local emergency services. Multiple units from the fire and rescue services, as well as police teams, were dispatched to the scene. The search operation has employed a variety of specialized equipment to increase the chances of locating the missing individual. Helicopters from both the police and rescue services have been deployed to survey the water from above, while boats equipped with sonar and echo sounding technology have been navigating the lake to detect any signs below the surface.

An underwater drone has also been utilized, providing the ability to inspect areas that are difficult or dangerous for divers to access directly. Despite these combined efforts and the application of advanced technology, the search has so far not yielded any positive results. The authorities remain committed to continuing their search until further notice.

Werbellinsee, located approximately 60 kilometers northeast of Berlin, is a popular destination for both local residents and tourists, especially during the summer months. With a maximum depth of over 50 meters, the lake presents significant challenges for search and rescue operations. The combination of deep waters and often limited underwater visibility can hinder efforts, despite the use of modern sonar and remotely operated vehicles.

Police have cordoned off parts of the lake to allow emergency teams to work without interference. Members of the missing man's family and friends have gathered at the lakeside, anxiously awaiting updates. Trained counsellors have been made available to provide support to those affected by the incident.

Officials have reminded the public of the risks associated with swimming in open water, particularly in lakes where currents, sudden drops in depth, or underwater vegetation can pose dangers, even to experienced swimmers. The circumstances leading up to the young man's disappearance remain under investigation, and police have appealed for witnesses who may have been on the lake or nearby at the time to come forward with any information that could assist the search.

Efforts are ongoing, with teams rotating through shifts to maintain a continuous presence at the site. Search operations are expected to continue as long as necessary, with additional resources on standby should conditions change or new information become available.
