Microsoft Teams to Launch Automated Office Attendance Tracking

Microsoft is preparing to introduce an automated feature in its Teams platform that enables organizations to record employee office presence based on location data. The company had initially scheduled the rollout for an earlier date, but updates from the Microsoft 365 Admin Center indicate that deployment is now planned for June 2026.

The new feature will allow administrators to configure Microsoft Teams to automatically detect when users are present within a company building by identifying their connection to the corporate Wi-Fi network. Once enabled, the system can log employee attendance without requiring manual check-ins, streamlining the process of tracking in-office workdays. This functionality is intended to help teams coordinate more effectively and facilitate in-person collaboration by making it easier to know which colleagues are on-site.

Privacy concerns have been raised regarding the collection and use of location data, particularly in the context of workplace surveillance. Microsoft has addressed these issues by ensuring that the feature is disabled by default across all organizational tenants. Administrators must actively opt in and configure the system before it becomes operational. Even after activation, end users retain the ability to control the visibility of their location information, choosing whether to share their office attendance with colleagues.

Initially, the automated attendance feature will be available for both macOS and Windows versions of Microsoft Teams. The system is designed to respect defined working hours, refraining from updating location status outside of official office times. Users' working hours can be set through Teams or synchronized with their Outlook calendars. Additionally, any location entries logged outside of these periods will be automatically deleted, adding another layer of privacy protection for employees.

For the feature to function as intended, administrators must map specific Wi-Fi BSSIDs (Basic Service Set Identifiers) to corresponding office buildings within the organization's settings. Once the mapping is complete, users can leverage the attendance tracking capability when connecting to the designated Wi-Fi networks. The configuration process can also extend to mapping particular devices, such as monitors, to specific locations for more granular tracking, though this is an optional enhancement.

The company has stated that the feature's rollout will take place throughout June 2026, following a previous target of May. The gradual deployment allows organizations time to review internal policies and ensure employee awareness about the new functionality. Microsoft emphasizes that the attendance tracking is meant to support workplace coordination rather than enforce strict monitoring, and provides tools for both administrators and users to maintain transparency and control over personal information.

This upcoming addition to Microsoft Teams reflects ongoing trends in digital workplace management, where hybrid and flexible work patterns have increased the need for solutions that can accurately track office attendance without imposing excessive administrative burdens. While the feature offers practical benefits for operational planning and resource management, its implementation underscores the importance of balancing technological efficiency with employee privacy and autonomy in the modern workplace.
