Microsoft Resolves Remote Desktop Freezing Issues

Fri 25th Apr, 2025

Microsoft has addressed a significant issue that caused Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) sessions to freeze on Windows 11 and Windows Server 2025 following recent updates. This problem had been troubling users since the early updates of the year.

According to Microsoft, the freezing of RDP sessions occurred after the installation of the February security update (KB5051987) and subsequent updates on devices running Windows Server 2025. Users reported that their sessions would lock up shortly after connecting, rendering both mouse and keyboard unresponsive. This situation necessitated disconnecting and reconnecting to the session, disrupting productivity.

The company has confirmed that the April security updates, particularly update KB5055523, effectively resolve this issue. Microsoft has advised users to install the latest updates as they contain crucial enhancements and fixes for known problems.

In the Windows 11 24H2 release notes, Microsoft also indicated that a similar freezing issue could occur after installing the January 2025 update preview and subsequent updates. However, they noted that the update preview from late February (KB5052093) had already rectified the problem for desktop users.

For administrators experiencing RDP issues, it is recommended to ensure that the most recent updates from April are installed to prevent further disruptions in remote sessions.

In recent months, Microsoft has faced criticism for updates that led to widespread problems after their release. Earlier this week, the company released updated packages for Windows 10 versions 22H2 and 21H2, as well as Windows Server 2022, to address an error that appeared following the installation of the April security updates. This error, identified by the code 0x80070643, indicated an installation failure but did not affect the overall functionality of the updates or devices.
