Meta Acquires AI Voice Generator PlayAI

Mon 14th Jul, 2025

Meta has announced its acquisition of PlayAI, a startup specializing in the generation of artificial intelligence (AI) voices. This move is part of Meta's strategy to enhance its offerings in the field of AI-driven voice technology.

PlayAI is recognized for developing highly realistic-sounding voices intended for AI voice agents, which they refer to as Real-time Voice Intelligence. The technology has already found application across various sectors, with notable clients including major firms such as Bosch, Salesforce, Amazon, Ford, Walgreens, and Red Bull.

With this acquisition, these companies will now utilize services from Meta, as PlayAI, along with its entire team, transitions to the tech giant. Meta has confirmed the acquisition to Bloomberg, indicating that the formal integration of PlayAI into the Meta family is expected to occur imminently. However, details regarding the financial aspects of the deal or specific terms have not been disclosed yet.

Bloomberg has also cited an internal memo revealing that PlayAI's technology is considered a significant asset for Meta's ambitions in AI characters, audio creation, and wearable devices. Interestingly, Meta had previously established a division focused on audio services, including a generative voice AI known as Voicebox. Earlier in 2023, Meta opted not to make Voicebox publicly available due to concerns over potential misuse of the technology. This decision seems to have shifted, as competitors have actively pursued similar technologies.

The PlayAI team is expected to report to Johan Schalkwyk, who recently joined Meta from Sesame AI, a company dedicated to developing voice technology aimed at enhancing everyday tasks.

Although the exact contributions of PlayAI to Meta's portfolio remain somewhat unclear, the startup's website features various demo AI voice agents designed for specific industries such as healthcare, real estate, and gaming. Currently, these demos are not available for testing, but they are intended to assist users in inquiries and appointments related to their respective fields.

Meta's acquisition of PlayAI is part of a broader trend among major technology companies, which are actively seeking to acquire smaller startups and innovative firms to bolster their technological capabilities and talent pools. This practice, long established in Silicon Valley, reflects the competitive landscape in the tech industry.

Additionally, Meta is reportedly on a recruitment drive for AI experts, with Mark Zuckerberg personally reaching out to prospective candidates. Allegedly, substantial financial incentives are being offered to attract individuals to join Meta's newly formed Superintelligence Labs, helmed by Alexandr Wang, the former CEO of Scale AI, which was also acquired by Meta for over $14 billion. This initiative has already drawn former employees from notable organizations such as OpenAI, Anthropic, and Apple.
