Matthew Broderick and Alan Ruck, the stars of the iconic 1986 film Ferris Bueller's Day Off, are reportedly in discussions to collaborate on a new comedy project. According to industry sources, the duo is considering a remake of the French buddy comedy Le meilleur reste à venir (2019), which translates to The Best Is Yet To Come.
The original film, which was also adapted for German audiences by Til Schweiger in 2023, revolves around two best friends who, due to a misunderstanding, believe that one of them has only a few months left to live. This premise sets the stage for a series of adventures as the mismatched pair--one a carefree spirit and the other more grounded--embark on a journey to celebrate life and their friendship.
Allan Loeb, known for his work on Rock of Ages, is set to write the screenplay, while Jon Turteltaub, director of films like Last Vegas and Meg, is attached to direct. Dimitri Rassam, who produced the original French version, will serve as the executive producer for this new adaptation.
The potential film marks a significant reunion for Broderick and Ruck, who became household names through their roles in Ferris Bueller's Day Off, a film that captured the spirit of teenage rebellion and the desire to break free from the constraints of school life. In the original movie, Broderick portrayed the titular character Ferris, a high school student who devises an elaborate plan to skip school, joined by his best friend Cameron (played by Ruck) and his girlfriend.
As the entertainment industry continues to explore remakes of beloved classics, this project could further enhance the legacy of Broderick and Ruck, bringing their comedic chemistry back to the big screen. Reports suggest that filming may commence this summer, although no official timeline has been confirmed.
