A tragic incident unfolded in Manchester, where a violent attack on a synagogue resulted in the deaths of two individuals, with the assailant also killed by police. According to authorities, the suspected attacker was released on bail at the time of the assault, having recently been arrested for allegations of rape.
The 35-year-old British national of Syrian descent was reportedly on bail when he executed the attack during Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar. The Manchester Anti-Terror Unit disclosed that the suspect had a criminal history but was not known to them as a threat. Investigators believe he may have been influenced by extreme Islamist ideologies.
The attack occurred outside the synagogue, where the perpetrator drove a vehicle into a crowd before using a knife to assault individuals nearby. Attempts were made to breach the synagogue itself, but the swift response from law enforcement prevented further casualties. The assailant was shot and killed by police during the confrontation.
The victims were identified as members of the Jewish community, aged 53 and 66. Additionally, three other individuals sustained serious injuries and are currently hospitalized. Reports indicate that one of the deceased may have been inadvertently struck by police gunfire during the response, as the assailant was not armed with a firearm.
As part of the ongoing investigation, police have arrested a total of six individuals in connection with the attack, including three suspects aged between 18 and 40, who are being investigated for their potential involvement in the planning and execution of the attack.
Authorities have commended the courage of synagogue security personnel and attendees, as well as the rapid police intervention, which averted greater loss of life and ensured that the attacker was unable to gain access to the synagogue.
