Specialized recovery operations on the Maldives have led to the discovery of four missing Italian divers in an underwater cave system near the Vaavu Atoll. The Maldivian National Defence Force (MNDF) confirmed that the bodies were located during a coordinated search involving the local coast guard, police, and a professional Italian rescue team.

The divers, who had been unaccounted for since their expedition last week, were found in the third section of a cave complex extending over 260 meters in length. The recovery mission remains ongoing, as the process of bringing the bodies to the surface is considered highly challenging due to the cave's depth and hazardous conditions.

Efforts to retrieve the divers have been complicated by the risk factors associated with deep cave diving. Tragically, during an earlier rescue attempt, a member of the Maldivian military lost his life. Divers Sami Paakkarinen, Jenni Westerlund, and Patrik Grönqvist, all recognized for their experience in deep, complex cave environments, took part in the mission to locate and retrieve the missing individuals.

The incident began when a group of five Italian divers disappeared on Thursday during an exploration of the underwater cave system. The group intended to reach depths of up to 60 meters within the cave, which is known for its challenging conditions and limited access. On Friday, the body of the group's diving instructor, Gianluca Benedetti, was recovered at the cave entrance.

Victims Identified

The divers who lost their lives include Monica Montefalcone, a respected ecology professor at the University of Genoa; her daughter Giorgia Sommacal, a university student; Muriel Oddenino, a scientist; Federico Gualtieri, a marine biologist; and the instructor Gianluca Benedetti. The victims were conducting an exploratory dive as part of a research and educational initiative.

Montefalcone, her daughter, and their colleagues had planned to examine the extensive cave system at significant depths. The underwater terrain at Vaavu Atoll is notorious for its complexity, strong currents, and limited visibility, posing additional risks even for experienced divers.

Questions Around Diving Permissions

Regulations in the Maldives typically restrict recreational dives to a maximum depth of 30 meters. However, the Italian group reportedly obtained a special permit for their expedition. According to official statements, this permit was only valid for three of the five divers, raising concerns about compliance with local safety protocols.
