Maldives Implements Landmark Generational Smoking Ban

The Maldives has enacted a pioneering policy prohibiting the sale, purchase, and use of tobacco products for individuals born on or after January 1, 2007. This measure, which took effect on November 1, positions the Maldives as the first nation globally to fully implement a generational ban on tobacco use, reflecting a significant public health initiative aimed at curbing future rates of smoking-related illnesses.

Under the new regulation, anyone born in 2007 or later is not permitted to buy, possess, or consume tobacco products within the Maldives. Retailers throughout the island nation are required to verify the age of buyers before completing any tobacco sales, ensuring strict adherence to the new law. The ban encompasses all forms of tobacco, including traditional cigarettes, cigars, and other tobacco-based products, extending to both residents and visitors.

The Maldives' approach distinguishes itself from other countries considering similar tobacco control measures. In the United Kingdom, a comparable generational ban is still under legislative review. New Zealand, which was the first country to pass such a law, repealed its generational ban within a year of its introduction in 2023, leaving the Maldives as the only country with an active, nationwide generational ban on tobacco use.

The policy is particularly notable given the Maldives' status as a popular international tourist destination, comprising more than 1,100 small coral islands across the Indian Ocean. The ban applies equally to tourists and foreign visitors, requiring compliance with the nation's tobacco laws during their stay. This comprehensive approach reflects the government's intent to promote a healthy environment for both residents and guests.

Health officials have indicated that the generational ban, alongside broader restrictions on tobacco and vaping products, forms a central component of the country's long-term public health strategy.
