Major Drug Trafficking Network Dismantled in Hamburg Following Record Cocaine Seizure

Tue 8th Jul, 2025

In a significant operation, law enforcement agencies have dismantled an international drug trafficking organization linked to the largest cocaine seizure in European history. The operation, which took place in Spain, Lithuania, and Ireland, resulted in the arrest of nine individuals associated with the drug syndicate responsible for smuggling approximately 16 tons of cocaine through the Port of Hamburg in February 2021.

The cocaine shipment, intercepted in Hamburg, was discovered in three containers originating from Paraguay and had an estimated street value exceeding two billion euros. Despite previous arrests, many key figures of the organization remained at large until now, when collaborative efforts among police forces led to the recent apprehensions.

Authorities revealed that the criminal group had been operational for several years, reportedly since 2021, and was involved in smuggling not only cocaine from South America but also hashish from Morocco and marijuana sourced from Spain to various destinations across Europe. The operation was described as extensive, with multiple arrests occurring in Lithuania, alongside one arrest each in Spain and Ireland.

During the coordinated action, law enforcement seized substantial evidence, including over two million euros in cash, seven firearms, more than one hundred kilograms of marijuana, GPS detectors, encrypted mobile phones, and various documents related to the drug trafficking activities.

The organization, which had roots in Lithuania, strategically utilized Spain--particularly the regions of Valencia, Tarragona, and Málaga--as a logistical hub for its operations. From these locations, the syndicate transported large quantities of narcotics via ships, trucks, and cars to other countries within Europe.

Central to the drug trafficking operations was the son of the alleged leader of the organization. This individual was apprehended in Orihuela, located in the province of Alicante, where he played a crucial role in orchestrating numerous drug deliveries. Reports indicate that he operated under constant protection from two bodyguards and was often seen driving a high-performance vehicle, complicating surveillance efforts by authorities.

The massive cocaine seizure in Hamburg had marked a turning point in the fight against drug trafficking in Europe, bringing heightened scrutiny to the operations of such gangs. Following the initial discovery of the drugs, many of the key perpetrators and accomplices were arrested, with a significant number already facing convictions.
