Major Fire Response in Mainz: Blaze Extinguished in Back Building

Sat 14th Jun, 2025

Mainz experienced a significant emergency response on Saturday morning due to a fire that erupted in the first floor of a rear building. At approximately 10:55 AM, the Integrated Control Center in Mainz received reports of thick, dark smoke emanating from the site. The Mainz Professional Fire Department, along with the Volunteer Fire Department from Mainz City, swiftly mobilized to assess the situation.

Upon arrival, firefighters encountered flames shooting from a window, which had begun to spread to the roof above. Crews worked diligently to address a smoldering fire located beneath the roof surface, necessitating extensive opening and inspection efforts. The tight proximity of the surrounding structures complicated access for the aerial ladder, prompting teams to secure their position from an adjacent building.

The strenuous conditions were exacerbated by intense sunlight, making roof operations particularly challenging. However, the availability of ample hydration and appropriate protective gear helped mitigate the physical strain on the responders.

Within approximately 20 minutes, firefighters managed to bring the blaze under control. The subsequent extinguishing efforts continued for nearly two hours. Emergency medical services assessed five individuals at the scene, with one person requiring transport to a hospital. A volunteer ambulance from the Malteser Relief Service was present to support the operational teams.

The Technical Relief Organization (THW) was called in to ensure the structural safety of the damaged building. These protective measures were ongoing at the time of this report. Meanwhile, local authorities are conducting an investigation into the cause of the fire, and the extent of property damage remains undetermined.

In total, the emergency response involved 23 personnel from the Professional Fire Department, nine from the Volunteer Fire Department, two volunteers from the Malteser Relief Service, eight paramedics, six police officers, and ten members of the THW. During this operation, the Volunteer Fire Department from Mainz-Bretzenheim assumed responsibility for maintaining readiness at Fire Station 1, providing additional support with one member on site.
