Lufthansa has announced that it intends to maintain more than half of its scheduled flights during the upcoming pilot strike affecting Thursday and Friday. According to a special flight timetable released by the airline, over 50 percent of originally planned flights will proceed as scheduled across both days, with long-haul routes expected to reach operational rates of up to 60 percent. The cargo division, Lufthansa Cargo, is also set to operate more than 80 percent of its services despite the industrial action.
The airline is able to uphold this level of service by utilizing pilots who have volunteered to continue working during the strike period. Additionally, Lufthansa will deploy larger aircraft and collaborate with partner airlines to minimize disruption. Flights to the Middle East, including services to Riyadh, are exempt from the strike due to ongoing security concerns in the region.
The pilot union, Vereinigung Cockpit (VC), has called on its members to participate in a work stoppage set to last from midnight Thursday until the end of Friday. The industrial action follows unresolved negotiations concerning pay structures for Lufthansa CityLine pilots, as well as disputes over occupational pension schemes within the mainline and cargo divisions.
Lufthansa City Airlines is expected to operate on its regular schedule throughout the strike, while Lufthansa CityLine will be affected on Thursday but plans to return to near-normal operations on Friday. This latest strike action follows a previous walkout in mid-February, which coincided with industrial action by the UFO cabin crew union and led to the cancellation of around 800 flights, impacting almost 100,000 passengers.
Lufthansa management criticized the escalation of industrial action, particularly in light of recent geopolitical instability involving the Iran conflict, which has introduced additional complexities for flight operations. The airline emphasized its commitment to maintaining a stable flight schedule for passengers and cargo customers wherever possible.
The ongoing dispute centers on stalled collective bargaining processes. While Lufthansa is working to ensure the continuity of operations through contingency measures, passengers are advised to check their flight status and monitor updates from the airline regarding potential changes or cancellations.
The situation underscores broader challenges facing the aviation industry, where labor relations and global uncertainties can significantly impact service continuity. Lufthansa's efforts to mitigate the effects of the strike reflect both the operational flexibility of the airline and the ongoing importance of dialogue between management and employee representatives.
