Challenges Facing Local Pharmacies Highlighted in Recent Discussions

Recent discussions led by CDU Bundestag member Nicklas Kappe with local pharmacists Karima Ballout and Niklas Herkenhoff have brought attention to the ongoing challenges faced by pharmacies across Germany. The meeting, which took place in Bottrop, underscored the significant financial pressures on these essential healthcare providers.

For the past two decades, the state-regulated fees that pharmacies receive for dispensing medications have remained largely unchanged, despite a staggering 75% increase in personnel costs and a 41% rise in operational expenses. As a result, approximately 10% of pharmacies are currently operating at a loss, while an additional 25% are under significant financial strain, according to statements made by pharmacist Niklas Herkenhoff.

The trend of pharmacy closures has accelerated, with around 1,500 pharmacies shutting down over the last three years, a figure that nearly matches the total number of pharmacies in the Westfalen-Lippe region. Kappe emphasized the importance of the coalition agreement among the CDU, CSU, and SPD, which outlines several measures aimed at stabilizing local pharmacies. He noted, "Our coalition agreement has laid a solid foundation for preserving and strengthening the pharmacies we need in our communities."

One key proposal within the coalition agreement is to increase the dispensing fee by EUR1.15. Ballout stressed the urgency of this change, warning that without prompt action, hundreds of pharmacies across the country could close in the coming months. She expressed optimism that the new coalition understands the severity of the issues at hand and is eager for swift implementation of the proposed solutions.

During a tour of the Bottrop Post-Apotheke, both pharmacists illustrated the diverse roles that local pharmacies play beyond simply dispensing medications. They provide customized medicines, conduct blood pressure measurements, and offer comprehensive medication reviews and consultations. Herkenhoff mentioned that such consultations often lead to a reduction in the number of medications a patient needs. This not only enhances patient well-being but also reduces the burden on healthcare providers and saves costs for insurance companies.

Ballout added that effective therapy management can help prevent costly hospital admissions and reduce the need for early nursing home placements. She expressed a commitment to further developing the capabilities of pharmacies to improve patient care while enhancing economic efficiency, especially in light of the demographic changes affecting the population.
