Gipsy Kings: "Music Is a Natural Way of Life"

The beach is typically regarded as a haven for relaxation and harmony; however, tensions have escalated at Lobbe on the island of Rügen between lifeguards and kite surfers. Reports indicate that the situation has become so strained that law enforcement had to intervene.
Lifeguards are voicing their frustrations as kite surfers reportedly disregard designated swimming zones. A retired police officer, now a volunteer lifeguard at Lobbe, highlighted the issue, stating that kite surfers often operate without consideration for safety regulations.
Recently, the water police confirmed that they initiated administrative proceedings against two individuals, aged 56 and 54, for allegedly violating a specific paragraph of the Waterway Traffic Regulations. This regulation mandates that surfers maintain a distance of at least 50 meters from marked swimming areas and bathers when operating in the water.
In response to the safety concerns posed by kite surfers, lifeguards have had to repeatedly raise warning flags. While this action does not constitute a formal swimming ban, it serves as a precautionary measure advising the public against entering the water. The lifeguard expressed frustration at the high speeds at which some kite surfers operate, often leading to dangerous situations.
Officials from the municipality of Mönchgut acknowledge that kite surfers typically frequent the beach during periods of strong winds and in the off-season when swimming is less appealing. Nonetheless, adherence to established regulations is crucial. There are designated paths for water sports enthusiasts to access the water and buoys marking the swimming area, which are part of the beach's safety guidelines.
The tourism manager for the region emphasized that the behavior of some kite surfers reflects a broader lack of consideration for others in society. In contrast, lifeguards from the German Red Cross in Rostock reported a more cooperative environment at other beaches, such as Warnemünde, where local surfers engage positively with safety initiatives.
