The conclusion of LG's smartphone journey has officially arrived, as the company announces the discontinuation of its last update servers, effective June 30, 2025. This move marks the end of software support for LG smartphones, which have not received updates since the company's exit from the mobile phone market in April 2021.
In a recent communication, LG confirmed that it would cease providing over-the-air (OTA) updates, bug fixes, and new Android versions for its remaining smartphone models. In addition, the PC application LG Bridge, utilized for backup and restoration of devices, will also be discontinued. Users have been advised to install any remaining updates before the service termination date.
Following its withdrawal from the smartphone sector, LG pledged to support its premium G and V series devices, alongside the Velvet and Wing models, with as many as three Android updates. The company also committed to offering two updates for select K-series models and the 2020 Stylo. LG successfully fulfilled this promise, allowing many high-end devices to upgrade to Android 13.
Production of the final LG smartphones ceased on July 31, 2021, as the company shifted its focus from mobile devices to other sectors, including consumer electronics, home appliances, and automotive technologies. The last notable attempt to revitalize its smartphone division was the innovative LG Wing, featuring a unique dual-screen design. However, the practical benefits of this design were questioned by reviewers.
Despite its eventual exit, LG was recognized for its contributions to the smartphone industry, often regarded as an innovator with unique designs and technologies, such as the curved G Flex and the modular LG G5. The company's legacy in the mobile market is marked by both challenges and notable advancements.
As LG transitions away from smartphones, it will continue to leverage its expertise in other fields, reinforcing its commitment to innovation and technology beyond mobile devices.
