Leipzig Zoo Implements Cricket Diet for Overweight Hedgehog Igor

In Leipzig, the local zoo has taken a unique approach to managing the health of its resident hedgehog, Igor, who has gained an excessive amount of weight. Known for his round physique and noticeable belly, Igor's voracious appetite has led to concerns about his well-being, prompting zoo staff to place him on a new diet focused on crickets.

Igor, a long-eared hedgehog, is accustomed to a diet rich in mealworms and grasshoppers--his preferred food sources. However, these calorie-dense options have contributed to his weight gain, leading to the decision to switch to crickets, which are less appealing to him.

Zoo staff have noted that Igor is particularly fond of mealworms, often consuming large quantities until his bowl is empty. Unfortunately, this has resulted in his current weight of 896 grams, which is considered excessive for a hedgehog of his species. To address this, his caretakers have limited mealworms to breakfast only, replacing the rest of his meals with crickets.

Despite the introduction of crickets, Igor's dietary change has not been smooth. Staff members have observed that he rejects most of the crickets provided. In fact, during a recent feeding, out of ten crickets distributed in his enclosure, eight were left uneaten. This reluctance highlights the challenge of getting Igor to adapt to his new, healthier diet.

The goal of this dietary regimen is to help Igor shed approximately 50 grams. So far, he has been losing between four to eight grams daily. A lighter Igor could lead to a more active and healthier lifestyle, as excess weight can be burdensome for hedgehogs, especially given their short legs.

Zoo staff are optimistic that with continued efforts, Igor will adjust to his new diet. The changes not only aim to improve his physical health but also enhance his overall quality of life within the zoo environment. A healthier weight is expected to alleviate some of the strain on his body, allowing him to engage more comfortably in his natural behaviors.

As the staff monitors Igor's progress, they remain committed to ensuring he receives the best care possible. The focus now shifts to encouraging him to embrace the cricket diet while continuing to assess his health and happiness in captivity.
