On July 28, renowned biathlete Laura Dahlmeier was involved in a serious mountain climbing accident while ascending in the alpine style with her climbing partner. The incident occurred around noon local time at an altitude of approximately 5,700 meters, when the climbers were struck by falling rocks.
Following the incident, Dahlmeier's climbing partner immediately contacted emergency services, triggering a rapid response for rescue operations. However, due to the remote location of the accident, a rescue helicopter was unable to reach the site until the morning of July 29.
An international mountain rescue team is currently coordinating efforts to recover Dahlmeier, with assistance from experienced climbers who are present in the region. The situation remains critical as teams work diligently to ensure her safety.
Dahlmeier, who is celebrated as one of the most successful German biathletes in World Cup history, made her competitive debut on March 1, 2013, in Oslo. She earned her first world championship title in 2015 as part of the German relay team in Kontiolahti, Finland, and subsequently secured six additional gold medals in various competitions.
At the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, she triumphed in both the sprint and pursuit events, also claiming a bronze medal in the individual competition. Over the course of her career, Dahlmeier amassed an impressive total of 20 World Cup victories before retiring in 2019 at the age of 25.
Following her retirement from competitive biathlon, Dahlmeier transitioned to a role as an expert commentator for ZDF during World Cup events. She has since focused on mountaineering, becoming a certified mountain and ski guide. Notably, she achieved a significant milestone in November of the previous year by summiting Ama Dablam in Nepal, where she set a speed record.
