Gipsy Kings: "Music Is a Natural Way of Life"

Two branches of the budget coffee chain LAP Coffee in Berlin were recently affected by acts of vandalism believed to be politically motivated. Authorities are investigating property damage at the locations situated at Boxhagener Platz in Friedrichshain and Rosenthaler Platz in Mitte. According to official statements, a letter claiming responsibility for the incidents was published on a well-known online platform associated with left-wing activism. Investigators currently regard the letter as credible.
The perpetrators reported inflicting damage to the shops using paint and stones. Graffiti containing hostile messages was left on the premises as well. The communication further indicated that more severe actions could occur in the future, specifically referencing the location at Boxhagener Platz.
LAP Coffee, established in 2023, has expanded rapidly throughout Berlin and now operates 22 outlets. The brand is recognized for offering coffee at lower prices compared to competitors, achieved through a business model that emphasizes compact venues, limited seating, and reliance on automated coffee machines. This approach has fueled both its popularity and criticism from certain groups.
The group claiming responsibility for the recent attacks expressed opposition to the expansion of LAP Coffee, asserting that the chain is driven by profit and investor interests at the expense of workers and the local community. They criticized the company's ambition to grow into a major player in the coffee industry, drawing comparisons to international chains. The group's stated aim is to push LAP Coffee out of Berlin.
Incidents targeting LAP Coffee are not new. Several outlets were defaced with red paint in a previous series of attacks in October. Additionally, efforts to campaign against the chain have included poster campaigns throughout the city. The ongoing opposition appears to stem from the company's perceived alignment with commercial interests and the changing urban landscape in Berlin.
In response to earlier incidents, representatives of LAP Coffee highlighted that their business has become a focal point for broader social dissatisfaction, largely due to its visibility and popularity. The company maintains that it provides affordable coffee options and creates jobs, while critics argue that the chain contributes to the gentrification of local neighborhoods and undermines smaller businesses.
Berlin authorities continue to monitor the situation closely. The investigation is being led by the state security division, which is responsible for handling politically motivated crimes. Officials are also reviewing the authenticity of online postings and any further threats made against the coffee chain.
This recent wave of attacks reflects ongoing tensions in Berlin around issues of urban development, commercial expansion, and political activism. Law enforcement is urging anyone with information related to the incidents to come forward as efforts continue to prevent further escalation.
