In a devastating incident in Blatten, Switzerland, a landslide has tragically resulted in the death of a local shepherd, aged 64, who was attempting to rescue his livestock. The landslide, which occurred on a Wednesday afternoon, unleashed a massive torrent of glacier debris, mud, and ice from the Birch Glacier, catching the emergency services off guard. The scale of destruction was far greater than initially assessed, burying significant portions of the village beneath tons of rubble.
The shepherd, well-known in the area, was reportedly on his way to secure his animals when the natural disaster struck. Authorities have confirmed that he was likely located below the village, near where his barn was situated, which has now been engulfed by approximately 15 to 20 meters of debris. Initial investigations indicated that the barn was outside the designated evacuation zone, leading to the unfortunate situation.
As the search for the missing man progressed, hopes began to dwindle. On Friday, police announced a temporary halt to the recovery efforts, citing ongoing instability in the landslide's material, which poses significant risks to rescue teams. Access to the rear Lötschental has been restricted, and authorities are unable to predict when this area might be reopened for further exploration.
In addition to the human toll, the landslide also affected numerous farm animals. The exact count of sheep and other livestock buried under the debris remains unclear, but officials noted that many were situated in areas not included in the evacuation perimeter.
Fortunately, there was a glimmer of hope as the waters from the Lonza River began to recede, alleviating concerns about potential flooding in nearby communities. Emergency workers expressed relief over the reduced threat posed by the accumulated water, which had previously endangered several villages in the valley.
As the community grapples with the aftermath of this tragic event, the focus remains on the search for the missing shepherd and the recovery of lost livestock amidst the extensive damage caused by the landslide.
