
Ukraine Targets Outdated Military Equipment in Ongoing Conflict

The ongoing labor negotiations within the quick-service restaurant sector are at a standstill, prompting the initiation of a mediation process. The mediation comes after five rounds of discussions between the Federal Association of System Gastronomy (BdS) and the Food, Beverage, and Hospitality Union (NGG) failed to produce a resolution.
The NGG has been advocating for a minimum starting wage of EUR15 per hour during these negotiations with major chains like McDonald's and Burger King. The BdS, representing approximately 120,000 workers in the industry, has proposed a modest increase to just over EUR13 per hour for the lowest three wage categories, with the first pay rise set to take effect retroactively from January 1, 2025. This proposal has been met with significant opposition from the NGG, who describe it as inadequate and a mere illusion of progress.
Freddy Adjan, a deputy leader of the NGG, has criticized the employer side for its perceived unwillingness to negotiate meaningfully. He highlighted the nine months that have elapsed since the initial talks in July 2024, which he believes should have allowed ample time for the BdS to address their detailed demands.
As the situation grows more contentious, the NGG organized action days and warning strikes earlier this year to escalate pressure on employers. Despite these efforts, the BdS maintains that substantial differences remain between the two parties, complicating the path to a mutually acceptable agreement.
According to Samir Boudih, a union representative, the mediation process represents the last opportunity for the parties to reach a consensus after the failure of direct negotiations. However, he noted that the entrenched positions on both sides make a swift resolution unlikely.
In addition to wage increases, the NGG is also pushing for a one-time bonus of EUR500 for union members, as well as an increase in training compensation for apprentices to EUR1,150 for the first year, EUR1,250 for the second year, and EUR1,350 for the third year. A critical aspect of their demands includes establishing a wage floor above the minimum wage to ensure that workers receive fair compensation for their labor.
Representatives from the BdS have indicated that their proposal, which includes a 42-month contract length, is their best offer. However, the NGG has described it as a "meager offer" that fails to address the financial realities faced by employees, particularly given that several wage categories have already been eclipsed by the legal minimum wage.
As the mediation gets underway, the NGG has warned that if a satisfactory agreement is not reached, they will consider pursuing negotiations directly with individual employers. They have also expressed concerns that the current employer stance could exacerbate the ongoing staffing shortages in the industry, which are already critical.
