KIM Celebrates Five Years of Transforming Healthcare Communication

Tue 1st Jul, 2025

Since its launch in June 2020, the KIM (Kommunikation im Medizinwesen) service has become an integral part of the German healthcare system, as confirmed by Gematik in a recent press announcement. This innovative platform enables healthcare facilities to send and receive sensitive health-related documents electronically through the Telematikinfrastruktur (TI).

The widespread rollout of KIM commenced shortly after its approval, and by October 1, 2021, its use became mandatory for the transmission of electronic sick leave certificates (eAU). KIM is also utilized for various other functions, including the electronic health reports, electronic application and approval processes (EBZ), and electronic replacement certificates (eEB).

Currently, over 160,000 medical institutions, including doctor and dental practices, hospitals, pharmacies, nursing homes, and public health services, utilize KIM, each with at least one KIM address. The application facilitates the exchange of more than 600 million messages and approximately five million transactions weekly, solidifying KIM's role as a vital tool in everyday practice.

According to Gematik, KIM offers numerous advantages, such as a privacy-compliant and encrypted transmission of sensitive health data with reduced administrative burden. Other benefits include savings on postage and paper, as well as expedited communication across different facilities. Starting in October, the KV-Connect communication service is set to be decommissioned, meaning most data exchanges will transition to KIM.

Thomas Jenzen, Product Group Director ART ÖGD at Gematik, emphasized the significant contributions KIM has made over the past five years in advancing digitalization within the healthcare sector. He noted that the collaborative efforts among all stakeholders have led to the establishment of an interoperable standard, forming a foundation for modern and sustainable healthcare delivery.

Looking ahead, Gematik plans to continue enhancing KIM to make communication within the healthcare realm more user-friendly, reliable, and efficient.
